Year 1

The Year 1 Team

Year 1 Teacher: Miss Lewis
Teaching Assistants: Miss Birchall & Mrs Dennis

Year 1 is a wonderful adventure, and I am so excited to share your child’s learning journey! Your children will transition onto the National Curriculum this year and explore a range of topics across all subjects. They will have access to continuous provision and participate in lots of enquiry learning.

You will receive a newsletter every half term to inform you about our upcoming topics and any key dates or information, however my door is always open if you have any concerns. Please do not hesitate to pop in after school at 3:20, ring the office to set up a meeting with me or write in your child’s diary.

PE Kits: PE will be on a Wednesday afternoon. Please make sure all PE kit items including footwear are named and that the children have suitable outdoor and indoor clothing. Trainers are advisable, in addition to pumps. PE kits should be brought into school at the start of each half term and they will be sent home at the end of each half term for a wash.
Reading books: We will change reading books every Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure you read frequently with your child, reading and discussing the text at least three times a week. We really hope that you will help us to improve reading by supporting your child at home.

Pupil planners: Please ensure that you make a note in your child’s planner to show that you have read with your child. There are a number of permission pages within the planner so please ensure you read through all pages within the first week of the school.

Book bags: Space in the cloakroom is limited so we store book bags in the classroom. It would be helpful if the children could use the school book bags and not large rucksacks.

Snack: The children will have access to fruit every day. In addition to this your child can order toast, milk, apple juice or orange juice every morning at a cost of 30p per item. Please ensure your child brings their money in a sealed envelope our purse/wallet to avoid it getting lost. Your child can also bring their own healthy snack in Year 1 for morning and afternoon break. If you need any ideas for healthy snacks then please do not hesitate to ask.

Homework will be given out every Friday and should be returned to school on a Wednesday. There will be one piece of Maths and one piece of Literacy work to complete and spellings to learn. We will have a weekly spelling test every Friday.

Topics: During the autumn term our driving theme will be Geography. We will be studying the book ‘The Naughty Bus’ by Jan Oke and carrying our simple fieldwork to study the Geography of the surrounding area.

Junk modelling: We are always in need of items for our creative area. We are grateful for any of the following items; milk bottle tops, small cardboard boxes, egg boxes, toilet roll tubes and bottles.

We are looking forward to a very successful and exciting year in Year 1 with your gorgeous children!
