Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to Year 1. This information t is designed to give you an overview of how the school day works and provide you with some key information.

The Year 1 team

Teachers: Miss Lewis

Teaching assistants: Mrs Humphries

PE Kits: PE will be on a Thursday afternoon. Please make sure all PE kit items are named and that the children have suitable outdoor and indoor clothing. Trainers are advisable, in addition to pumps. PE kits should be brought into school at the start of each half term and they will be sent home at the end of each half term for a wash.

Reading books: We will change reading books every Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure you read frequently with your child, reading and discussing the text at least three times a week. We aim to hear your child read twice a week in school, once independently and once during a group read. We really hope that you will help us to improve reading by supporting your child at home.

Pupil planners: Please ensure that you make a note in the child’s planner to show that you have read with your child. There are a number of information and permission pages within the planner. Please ensure that you read through all pages within the first week of school.

Book bags: Space in the cloakroom is very limited so we store book bags in the classroom. It would be helpful if the children could use the school book bags and not large rucksacks or bags.

Snack: The children will receive a healthy snack every day. The menu includes a range of foods like soft cheese, yogurts, crackers and fruit bread. The cost of snack remains the same as last year at £8 a half term. Please send the money into school in an envelope as soon as possible. In addition, all KS1 children are offered a piece of fruit every day.

Homework: will be handed out on a Friday and should be returned to school on a Wednesday. There will be one piece of Maths and one piece of English work to complete and spellings to learn. We will have a weekly spelling test every Friday.

Topics: During the Autumn term our driving theme will be Geography. We will be studying 'The Naughty Bus' and carrying out simple fieldwork to study the Geography of the surrounding area.

Junk modelling: We are always in need of items for our creative area. We are grateful for any of the following items; milk bottle tops, small cardboard boxes, egg boxes, toilet roll tubes and bottles.

We are looking forward to a very successful and exciting year in Year 1. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me, either after school, through the office or write in your child’s diary.
